| Kadri Gopalnath hails from a family of nagaswaram (wood wind instrument) players. He was the first to play Carnatic classical music on the saxophone, a western wind instrument considered unsuitable for producing gamakas (musical ornamentation) so intrinsic to the Carnatic system. Gopalnath, by sheer skill and mastery over the saxophone, coaxes the instrument to produce subtle quarter tones and gamakas very effectively. His raga expositions are not only replete with melody but also grammatically correct and his renditions have a sophisticated elegance. |
